A few villagers drinking around a log fire decided to put on a play for the village and their friends. Fradley Players was established in the summer of 1978 when Fradley was just 3 small hamlets. The players rehearsed in the old village hall which was sited in a similar position to where it is now. They performed one play in 1978 but as their numbers grew so did the plays they performed. They performed their first Pantomime, Cinderella in 1982.
The players continued for many years until in 1998 they were forced to stop performing plays as the growing village wanted a better hall and the original hall was demolished. Mary Bennett our founder member and the other enthusiastic thespians in the village were determined to keep going and rather than give up they adapted into a Murder Mystery team with mysteries written by one of their members, Margot Worton. They were hired by organisations who wanted to fund raise and employ us as their evening’s entertainment.
The present hall was completed and we re-established ourselves in the new venue performing many enjoyable plays and pantos. We have continued to also undertake murder mysteries both in the village and for other organisations and events. Lots of children from St Stephens School have joined our panto productions in chorus and main part roles becoming the real stars of our shows. Many have continued to come back each year even when they have moved to the Friary. We continue to rehearse regularly on a Monday night in the village hall and welcome anyone interested in taking part or helping out behind the scenes.
Now with our 40th anniversary being celebrated in 2018, we have decided to branch out and revamp our existing activities. We are still going to perform Plays and Pantos, ably assisted by the local children, but we are also setting up a film club called Take 3, which we hope will be a popular activity to our ever growing village. A way for old and new members of the village to meet and get to know each other and strengthen our community . An affordable fun evening for all.
